Chief's Bio

  • Chief of Police Sean Dunn was selected as Martinsville's Police Chief on May 5, 2014.

  • Dunn began his law enforcement career in 1993 serving with the Portsmouth, VA Police Department for 21 years. He held every rank in the department up to and including Police Commander (Major). His assignments included Uniform Patrol, Community Policing, Training, Public Affairs, Emergency Communications, Criminal Investigations and Administrative Services, including Budget, Backgrounds, and Hiring.

  • During his time as a Martinsville Police Chief, Dunn has led the creation of a totally integrated community policing department with a philosophy of reponsiveness to community concerns and an emphasis on Intelligence-Led Policing. During Dunn's first three years, Part 1 Crime was reduced by 30% and Violent Crime was reduced by 59%. Dunn credits these reductions to citizens taking a strong stand against crime.

  • Dunn currently serves on the Southside Survivor Response Center Board, Piedmont Community Services Community Recovery Board, Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy Board as the chair, Martinsville Adult Education Advisory Board and Martinsville Police Alternative Coalition.
